Uganda’s Electoral Commission has announced that the country will hold its next general election on January 15, 2026. President Yoweri Museveni, who has been in power since 1986, will seek another term, aiming to extend his rule to nearly 50 years.
Museveni, now in his 80s, is Africa’s fourth longest-serving leader. He has removed age and term limits twice through constitutional changes, allowing him to remain in office for decades. His government says he has brought stability, economic growth, and progress in fighting HIV/AIDS. Critics, however, accuse him of suppressing opposition, committing human rights abuses, and corruption. Authorities insist that due process is followed in all cases.
The main challenger is 43-year-old Bobi Wine, a popular musician turned politician. Wine, whose real name is Robert Kyagulanyi, has gained strong support among young voters. He claims Museveni’s previous victory in 2021 was unfair, alleging ballot-stuffing, voter intimidation, and bribery. Museveni’s party rejects these claims, saying he won through genuine voter support.
Six other candidates from smaller parties will also compete in the presidential election. In addition to the presidency, Ugandans will vote for members of parliament.
Museveni’s government hopes that the start of crude oil exports next year, from fields operated by France’s TotalEnergies and China’s CNOOC, will boost economic growth. Analysts say oil revenues could help the government maintain support among voters.
Uganda plays an important role in East Africa and contributes troops to peacekeeping and anti-insurgency operations in Somalia, South Sudan, the Democratic Republic of Congo, and Equatorial Guinea.
The upcoming election will be closely watched both inside Uganda and internationally, as it could shape the country’s political and economic future for years to come.
