Blake Lively and Justin Baldoni have officially resolved their long-standing legal conflict tied to the film It Ends with Us. The announcement came on Monday, effectively concluding a widely publicized case that garnered significant media attention in Hollywood and on social media for years.
The legal issues arose when Blake Lively accused Baldoni, who also directed the film, of inappropriate conduct during production. According to her initial complaint, Lively claimed that Baldoni made unsettling comments about his sex life and tried to introduce intimate scenes not included in the approved script.
Lively’s accusations also extended to producer Jamey Heath, whom she claimed had observed her while she was topless on set despite her requests for him to look away. The lawsuit claimed that Baldoni orchestrated a public relations campaign aimed at harming Lively's reputation following escalating tensions during filming.
Both parties released a joint statement via their attorneys confirming that the matter had been resolved in private. No financial disclosures were made. Lawyers for Lively and Baldoni expressed hope that the settlement would offer closure and permit all involved to proceed professionally.
The statement reaffirmed the pride felt by the team for their work on the film. Legal representatives acknowledged the challenges faced during production and affirmed the importance of addressing the concerns raised by Lively. This resolution averts what could have led to an extensive and costly court trial.
Following the news of the settlement, Lively made a surprise appearance at the Met Gala in New York, radiating joy on the red carpet in a stunning gown adorned with layers of pink, purple, and yellow tulle, promptly becoming a highlight of the event.
Earlier in the dispute, Baldoni and Wayfarer, the production company, had filed counterclaims against Lively and her husband Ryan Reynolds, citing extortion and defamation. However, a judge dismissed these counterclaims, narrowing the case scope prior to the recent settlement.
While some of Lively's allegations were dismissed, the judge allowed claims of retaliation to proceed to trial. This trial was slated to start on May 18 before both parties opted for a private settlement, likely sparing themselves further public attention and legal battles.
Based on Colleen Hoover's bestselling novel, It Ends with Us emerged as a box office hit in 2024, raking in over US$350 million globally and drawing considerable audience interest. Despite the controversies surrounding its making, the film continues to enjoy immense popularity and discussion in the industry.
