Vijay marked a significant victory in the Tamil Nadu state elections as his party emerged as the largest group. His political organization, Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam, clinched 108 out of 234 assembly seats, a dazzling debut for the actor who transitioned from cinema to politics last year.
The Election Commission of India confirmed that Vijay triumphed in both constituencies he contested—Tiruchi East and Perambur. Despite leading the elections, his party remains 10 seats shy of the 118 needed for an outright majority. Political commentators suggest that coalition discussions with other parties are likely imminent.
The election's results gained extensive media attention, given that Vijay only founded Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam in February 2024. Known for being one of the highest-paid actors in India, he stepped away from filmmaking post his last release, Jana Nayagan, in 2025, taking many fans by surprise with his political leap.
Though celebrated, Vijay's journey in politics was fraught with challenges, including a tragic stampede at one of his campaign rallies last October and various controversies that emerged during the campaign. Nevertheless, his robust support and loyal fanbase only seemed to strengthen as he campaigned.
The ruling party, Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam, secured 59 seats, while the All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam won 47. This election has undeniably altered the political landscape of Tamil Nadu, with Vijay's party rapidly establishing itself as a formidable contender.
Vijay's victory resonated far beyond Indian borders, reaching fans in Malaysia, where he boasts a substantial following. Celebrations erupted in Kuala Lumpur and George Town as fans congregated at Tea Kadai outlets, where the chain marked the occasion by offering free tea to those displaying congratulatory posters for Vijay.
Mohamed Rizwan Abdul Ghafoor Khan, co-founder of Tea Kadai, mentioned that the event was organized out of pure admiration for Vijay, resulting in around 400 complimentary cups of tea given from evening until midnight as supporters celebrated. Social media was abuzz with videos and images of these joyful festivities.
Vijay has held a special bond with Malaysia for years, with several of his blockbuster films, including Kuruvi and Kaavalan, being shot there. His appeal among Malaysian Tamil audiences has remained high, marking these celebrations as monumental for his supporters.
Last December, Vijay's farewell concert, Thalapathy Thiruvizha, at Bukit Jalil National Stadium attracted around 80,000 fans, setting records for celebrity events in Malaysia. With this new political achievement, many analysts believe Vijay is stepping into a pivotal role, influencing not just the film industry but also the political arena in Tamil Nadu.
