UAE and EU Presidents Discuss Stronger Partnership in Abu Dhabi

Post by : Mara Rahim

UAE President His Highness Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan met with His Excellency António Costa, President of the European Council, at Qasr Al Shati in Abu Dhabi. The meeting focused on enhancing cooperation between the United Arab Emirates and the European Union in political, economic, and humanitarian fields. Both leaders expressed their shared vision of building a future of stability, growth, and partnership based on mutual trust and understanding.

A key topic during the meeting was the ongoing negotiation of a Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement (CEPA) between the UAE and the European Union. The agreement is expected to increase trade, investment, and innovation across vital sectors such as energy, technology, and sustainability. Both sides highlighted that CEPA would open new business opportunities, strengthen economic ties, and create long-term benefits for both the UAE and EU economies.

His Highness Sheikh Mohamed underlined that the UAE considers its relationship with the European Union essential for achieving global progress and peace. He noted that cooperation between the two sides supports shared goals, including sustainable development and international stability. President Costa praised the UAE’s forward-looking approach and emphasized the importance of continuing collaboration in renewable energy, green technology, and education.

The discussions also included a review of major regional and international issues. Sheikh Mohamed and President Costa exchanged views on developments in the Middle East, especially the humanitarian situation in the Occupied Palestinian Territory. Both leaders called for continued efforts to preserve the ceasefire in Gaza and to ensure humanitarian assistance reaches those in need without interruption.

Both the UAE and EU reaffirmed their strong support for a two-state solution to the Palestinian-Israeli conflict. They agreed that peace and stability can only be achieved through dialogue, diplomacy, and mutual respect. Sheikh Mohamed and President Costa urged the international community to strengthen efforts toward achieving justice, security, and dignity for all people affected by ongoing conflicts.

Another key point of discussion was cooperation in renewable energy and climate action. Both leaders praised the progress made in joint projects focusing on clean energy and sustainable development. They agreed that collaboration between the UAE and the European Union in these areas is vital to addressing global environmental challenges and advancing a greener future.

The UAE and EU also discussed expanding cooperation in education, research, and cultural exchange. Sheikh Mohamed highlighted the importance of knowledge sharing and intercultural understanding as tools for building peaceful societies. President Costa expressed interest in strengthening academic partnerships and student exchange programs that bring people closer together.

Sheikh Mohamed and President Costa both emphasized that diplomatic dialogue is key to solving global challenges and promoting international cooperation. They expressed optimism that future visits and discussions would further strengthen UAE-EU relations and lead to more joint initiatives in various sectors. Their shared goal is to build a partnership that benefits not only both regions but also contributes to global peace and development.

The meeting was attended by several senior UAE officials, including Sheikh Sultan bin Hamdan Al Nahyan and Sheikh Mohammed bin Hamad bin Tahnoun Al Nahyan, along with ministers from both sides. Their presence highlighted the importance both nations place on advancing cooperation across multiple sectors. The discussions reflected a mutual commitment to turning shared visions into actionable strategies for the future.
