The United Arab Emirates is ramping up its preparations for the forthcoming 2026 UN Water Conference, set to take place in Abu Dhabi from December 8 to 10, where it will collaborate with Senegal. The UAE also showcased its dedication to the global water agenda during its involvement in the fourth UN Water Conference held in Dushanbe, Tajikistan, from May 25 to 28.
The Dushanbe conference attracted over 2,000 stakeholders from more than 110 nations and international bodies to tackle urgent water-related issues and identify viable solutions.
Throughout its participation, the UAE Ministry of Foreign Affairs engaged in the Asia-Pacific Regional Preparatory Meeting for the upcoming conference, co-organized by Tajikistan and the UN Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (ESCAP). This event gathered over 100 delegates to align regional priorities and expedite efforts towards achieving Sustainable Development Goal 6, which aims to ensure availability and sustainable management of water and sanitation for everyone.
Additionally, the UAE contributed to the African High-Level Water Conference that focused on Africa’s Water Vision 2063. This involvement underscored the UAE’s commitment to infusing regional perspectives, obligations, and projects into the broader global water dialogue.
During the event, the UAE participated in thematic sessions connected to the six interactive dialogues of the 2026 UN Water Conference. Collaborating with Senegal, the UAE worked alongside heads of state and various stakeholders to facilitate meaningful, action-oriented discussions that are expected to influence significant upcoming events, including the High-Level Political Forum in July, which will assess advancements related to Sustainable Development Goal 6.
On the conference's final day, the UAE was involved in discussions regarding the 2028 UN Water Conference, which Tajikistan will host, stressing the continuous need for momentum in global water initiatives and utilizing the achievements made in preparations for the 2026 conference.
The UAE signaled the significance of the interactive dialogue themes formulated by the UN General Assembly, considering them crucial for fostering collaboration, coordination, and sustainable practices in the water domain.
Furthermore, the UAE conducted bilateral meetings with essential partners, including representatives from the Tajikistan government, to bolster coordination across various international water initiatives, ensuring that the 2026 UN Water Conference becomes a crucial stepping stone for future water efforts worldwide.
The UAE's roles in the International Advisory Committee for the Dushanbe Water Process were also pivotal, aiding in the alignment of the conference’s final declaration with the goals and ambitions set for the 2026 UN Water Conference.
This engagement solidifies the UAE’s commitment to uphold a sustained, cohesive approach in international water matters while advocating for proactive global actions in line with the lead-up to and following the 2026 UN Water Conference in Abu Dhabi.
