Today marks the official commencement of the 2026 Turkmenistan Football Cup, showcasing thrilling quarter-final clashes throughout the country. This edition celebrates the 35th year of Turkmenistan's prestigious domestic football cup, featuring a competitive lineup of eight clubs from the top tier of national football.
Football enthusiasts are eagerly following the tournament as various prominent clubs vie for a chance to advance to the semi-finals. Among the participants are three teams from capital Ashgabat - Altyn Asyr, Ashgabat, and Kopetdag.
Other teams in contention include Nebitchi from Balkanabat, Shagadam from Turkmenbashy, Merv from Mary, and Ahal from the Ahal region, along with the titleholders Arkadag from Arkadag city.
The inaugural quarter-final match unfolded in Turkmenbashy, featuring a contest between Shagadam and Kopetdag, drawing substantial attention from local fans enthusiastic about the forthcoming domestic cup season.
Additionally, three pivotal quarter-final matches were hosted in Ashgabat. A highlight was the much-anticipated capital derby featuring Altyn Asyr versus Ashgabat at the Buzmeyin district stadium, where supporters were on the edge of their seats for this historic sporting event.
Defending champions Arkadag commenced their title defense against Merv at the Nisa Stadium, buoyed by their previous cup victory, eager to solidify their reputation as a leading force in Turkmen football.
In another significant quarter-final showdown, Ahal took on Nebitchi at the versatile Ashgabat Stadium. Ahal, known for its vast experience, was last year’s runner-up, having faced a narrow defeat against Arkadag in a gripping final.
Football officials announced that the second-leg quarter-finals will be staged on June 24, offering teams ample preparation time for the crucial return matches. The two-legged format promises to heighten the competitive atmosphere as clubs strive for a coveted spot in the semi-finals.
Last season saw Arkadag clinch the Turkmenistan Cup for the third time, triumphing over Ahal with a 2-1 victory in the finale. The 2026 tournament is set to deliver even more exhilarating football as clubs across Turkmenistan battle for national honor and a significant chapter in the nation’s football narrative.
