Argentina Investigates Hantavirus Outbreak Linked to Antarctic Cruise

Post by : Bianca Suleiman

Argentina's health officials are currently examining the origins of a potentially deadly hantavirus outbreak reported on a cruise ship that has recently returned from Antarctica.

The vessel departed from Argentina prior to passengers exhibiting symptoms associated with hantavirus, a serious rodent-borne illness. Authorities are focused on identifying the source and manner in which these infections emerged.

This inquiry coincides with a significant uptick in hantavirus infections throughout the nation. The Ministry of Health reports that 101 cases have surfaced since June 2025, nearly twice as many as the same timeframe last year.

Some public health experts in Argentina suspect that climate change is influencing the rise in cases by altering rodent habitats and populations.

The World Health Organization identifies Argentina as having one of the highest incidences of hantavirus in Latin America.

Transmission typically occurs through contact with the urine, droppings, or saliva of infected rodents. In severe cases, hantavirus can lead to critical respiratory issues and can be deadly without prompt treatment.

Health authorities are continuing to closely monitor the cruise ship situation while investigations are underway.
