On Sunday, U.S. President Donald Trump expressed admiration for Canada but avoided providing clear answers regarding the restart of trade negotiations. Attending a gala in Washington, he referred to a recent meeting with Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney and Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum as “very good” and “productive.”
The discussions were termed “constructive” by Carney’s office. However, when asked about resuming trade negotiations with Canada—on hold since Ontario's anti-tariff advertisements—Trump merely stated, “we’ll work it out.”
While acknowledging Canada’s reputation as tough negotiators, Trump mentioned his personal connection with Prime Minister Carney. To lighten the atmosphere, he shared a light-hearted remark about Canada’s ice hockey skills.
Earlier this year, Trump had implemented tariffs on Canada and Mexico concerning industries such as steel, aluminum, automobiles, lumber, and copper. Canadian tariffs reached up to 35%, while Mexico incurred 25%. The Canada-U.S.-Mexico Agreement (CUSMA) protects both nations from additional tariffs but is set for a mandatory review next year. Should the countries fail to reach consensus on renewal terms, the agreement may lapse in 2036.
Currently, both Canada and Mexico are exploring options to lessen tariffs and preserve duty-free trade amidst the unpredictable nature of U.S. trade policies. While Trump’s statements indicate goodwill, the future of trade in North America hangs in the balance, influenced by ongoing negotiations and tariffs that define the economic arena.
