Trump Asserts His Role in Preventing India-Pakistan Conflict via Trade Tariffs

Post by : Raina Nasser

During the US-Saudi Investment Forum, President Donald Trump asserted that his threats of imposing 350% trade tariffs played a pivotal role in averting a potential war between India and Pakistan. He stated that he received direct calls from the leaders of both nations, affirming that military action would be avoided.

Trump explained that he had cautioned both countries about the severe tariffs should their hostilities persist. He relayed a message from Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, who expressed gratitude for his intervention in what could have led to numerous casualties, while also claiming that Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi reached out to assure him that India would avoid escalation. Trump elaborated on his discussion with Modi, thanking him and suggesting a deal to diffuse the situation.

The President has often made similar assertions, suggesting he played a key role in brokering peace following the India-Pakistan ceasefire declared on May 10. His accounts have fluctuated, with previous tariff figures citing between 200% and 350%.

However, Indian officials have officially disputed Trump's statements. External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar clarified earlier this year that there was no direct communication between Modi and Trump during the hostilities, revealing that only US Vice President JD Vance had contacted PM Modi regarding possible Pakistani aggression. India has made it clear that trade discussions were not on the agenda, and that ceasefire efforts and diplomatic engagement occurred solely between Delhi and Islamabad.

Tensions surged between India and Pakistan in May 2025 following India's Operation Sindoor in retaliation to a terrorist incident in Pahalgam that resulted in 26 fatalities. Despite Trump's persistent assertions of having a hand in preventing conflict, India asserts that diplomatic channels exclusively handled the ceasefire and subsequent easing of tensions.

Trump's remarks, made in the presence of Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, are part of a broader history of grandiose claims regarding his impact on global relations. Analysts suggest that, while the US could have facilitated negotiations, the portrayal of Trump as the sole savior of peace contradicts official narratives from India.
