A horrific fire erupted in a hotel situated in the Malviya Nagar district of Delhi, resulting in the deaths of at least 21 individuals while several others sustained injuries, marking it as one of the most tragic incidents in the area in recent times. Emergency response teams tirelessly worked to evacuate guests and contain the rapidly spreading flames that overtook the establishment.
The blaze reportedly ignited around 8:50 a.m. in a restaurant located in the basement of the five-storey Flourish Stay hotel. Officials indicated that the fire swiftly spread throughout the building, also impacting a nearby property, leading to a serious emergency situation in the densely populated locality of Hauz Rani.
Authorities have confirmed that the deceased included both Indian citizens and foreign nationals. Preliminary investigations show that many of the victims from abroad hailed from African nations and Bangladesh, where they were in Delhi for medical purposes. Many guests were asleep when the fire broke out, leaving them little time to respond.
Eyewitness accounts depicted harrowing scenes, with trapped guests desperately seeking escape from the smoke-filled premises. Some individuals reportedly broke windows and jumped from upper levels, while local residents and rescue personnel placed mattresses below to soften the blows of falls. Videos captured the frantic attempts by guests to flee prior to the firefighters’ arrival.
A preliminary inquiry has raised alarming issues regarding the hotel’s fire safety protocols. Officials stated that the establishment was allegedly operating beyond its licensed capacity and lacked a valid fire safety clearance. Fire department representatives also noted that the structure had only one entry and exit point, inadequate ventilation, and basement accommodations that hindered rescue efforts.
The Delhi Fire Service dispatched 17 fire tenders and several emergency response units to the scene. Firefighters had to break through a shutter to reach the basement, where numerous individuals were trapped. A total of 37 people were successfully rescued during the extensive operation. Investigations into the cause of the fire and potential violations of safety regulations are ongoing.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed his condolences to the bereaved families and announced financial aid for those impacted. Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta conveyed her sorrow over the incident and assured the provision of necessary medical and relief assistance. Officials have committed to a thorough investigation amid growing concerns regarding compliance with fire safety standards for commercial establishments in the city.
