In a landmark achievement for aviation, Emirates has promoted Hanan Mohammed Jawad and Bakhita Al Mheiri to captain, making them the first Emirati women to hold this position within the airline's ranks. Both will helm the Boeing 777 fleet, showcasing the airline's commitment to empowering Emirati women and fostering national talent through its National Cadet Pilot Programme (NCPP), established in 1993.
Hanan, who joined Emirates in 2008 via the NCPP, realized her aviation dreams through determination and the support of the airline's training initiatives, accruing 9,253 flight hours along the way.
At just 14, Hanan was inspired by the UAE's first female pilot on TV, and she views her recent promotion as just the start of her journey—her time as a First Officer prepared her well for this new role. She shared that practices like skiing, yoga, and Pilates have honed her focus and discipline, essential for her captaincy.
Beginning her career at Emirates in 2011, Bakhita Al Mheiri drew motivation from prominent Emirati women in aviation as she worked her way up to captain. She credits the support from Emirates' mentors for enhancing her skills and preparedness.
Together, they urged aspiring female pilots to pursue their dreams, asserting that the UAE leadership acknowledges the critical role women play in nation-building. Emirates persists in fostering a supportive environment for women in aviation.
Capt. Hassan Alhammadi, Emirates' Divisional Senior Vice President of Flight Operations, praised the duo for their hard work and dedication. He emphasized the airline's ongoing commitment to nurturing Emirati talent at all levels.
Since its inception in 1993, the National Cadet Pilot Programme has played a crucial role in training Emirati pilots, leading many to positions of leadership in the aviation sector after rigorous training at Emirates’ advanced facilities.
The elevation of Hanan Jawad and Bakhita Al Mheiri not only marks a significant achievement for Emirates but also paves the way for future Emirati women aspiring to soar in aviation careers.
