The Hidden Impact of Under-Bed Storage on Sleep: Insights from an Expert

Post by : Saif Nasser

People often utilize the space beneath their beds for storing items like boxes, clothes, and papers. While this may seem practical, experts argue it could negatively influence sleep quality. According to interior designer France Brunel, having storage under the bed can engender a sense of “unfinished business” within our minds, which keeps our cognitive processes active even while we attempt to relax.

Brunel notes that even if these items are out of sight, our brains are conscious of their presence. They symbolize unresolved tasks that contribute to mental clutter. This creates a persistent mental load, preventing the nervous system from achieving complete relaxation. Consequently, sleep may become lighter and less rejuvenating.

This idea aligns with the concept of cognitive load, where surrounding clutter—visible or hidden—demands mental energy and can diminish clarity and restful sleep. The brain sends continuous signals that further work is pending, even when resting.

Moreover, Feng Shui principles, which focus on harmonious arrangements of living spaces, recommend against storing items beneath the bed. This approach perceives the space as vital for the natural flow of “chi,” or life energy. Blocking this area can create stagnant energy, adversely impacting emotional wellness and tranquil sleep.

Brunel recommends clearing out everything from underneath the bed, thoroughly cleaning the area, and permitting airflow. She asserts that an unobstructed space below the bed fosters relaxation for both body and mind. A serene, decluttered bedroom environment enhances the chances of experiencing deeper, more restorative sleep.

This overview aims to enlighten readers on how their sleeping environment can substantially influence their overall well-being. Nevertheless, persistent sleep difficulties may also have underlying medical reasons. Individuals experiencing ongoing issues should consult a healthcare provider.

Creating a tidy and open sleeping area could lead to enhanced restfulness, comfort, and tranquility during the night.
