Thailand’s former Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra has been granted a full release from his prison sentence following a royal pardon issued under the Royal Decree on Royal Pardons 2026. The official announcement came alongside celebrations for Queen Suthida’s birthday, as per a Royal Command from King Maha Vajiralongkorn.
Justice Minister Pol Lt Gen Rutthapon Naowarat confirmed Thaksin’s inclusion among those eligible for the pardon. Given that he has less than a year left on his sentence, he qualifies for immediate release per the new decree. This marks another pivotal moment in the life of one of Thailand’s prominent political figures.
As a result of the pardon, the 76-year-old will be able to remove his electronic monitoring device promptly, although completion of several administrative steps is still required to finalize his release. Provincial review committees will scrutinize the needed documents as part of the procedural norm.
In Thailand, royal pardons are customary and frequently occur during significant national celebrations. The decree this year honors Queen Suthida’s birthday, allowing for sentence reductions and releases of qualified inmates nationwide. Officials highlighted this decree as a continuation of Thailand’s tradition of extending clemency during royal festivities.
Previously, Thaksin was paroled in May after serving eight months of a one-year sentence. Factors such as his age and health were taken into account when deciding on his parole eligibility. His case has garnered extensive public interest, given his notable role in Thai politics for over two decades.
Thaksin returned to Thailand in August 2023 after years of voluntary exile, facing various legal challenges related to corruption and abuse of power. Originally sentenced to eight years, his imprisonment was reduced to one year via an earlier pardon, and he spent his time in a hospital facility due to medical issues instead of a standard prison.
His full release is likely to reignite discussions surrounding his political legacy and impact on Thailand’s political scene. While supporters see the royal pardon as a just and compassionate act, critics question the broader ramifications of his treatment within the judicial framework. Nevertheless, the decree concludes the remaining term of his sentence, closing a noteworthy legal chapter in his life.
