A groundbreaking discovery has been made in the aquatic environment near Sentosa, Singapore, with the identification of a new box jellyfish species that exhibits highly venomous properties. This significant finding pertains to the Chironex genus, widely recognized for housing some of the most dangerous marine species.
Researchers from Tohoku University in Japan, together with the National University of Singapore’s Lee Kong Chian Natural History Museum and Tropical Marine Science Institute, collaborated on this study. The new jellyfish has been designated as Chironex blakangmati, drawing its name from Sentosa’s historical Malay title, Pulau Blakang Mati.
This represents only the fourth identified species within the Chironex group. Species in this genus are notorious for their potent venom, capable of inflicting severe harm or death within minutes upon human contact. Although they are rare in sightings currently, the detection of this species emphasizes the urgency for ongoing monitoring of local waters.
The identification involved sophisticated genetic techniques that successfully differentiated this new species from its close relative, Chironex yamaguchii. Specific anatomical characteristics, such as the lack of pointed canals on the perradial lappets, were critical in classifying it as a unique species in the jellyfish family.
Additionally, during this research initiative, another species, Chironex indrasaksajiae, was recorded in Singapore waters for the first time. This species is generally associated with Thai marine habitats, indicating a broader distribution of box jellyfish across Southeast Asia than previously acknowledged.
Marine professionals urge swimmers to exercise caution in coastal areas, particularly around Sentosa. Recommendations include donning protective swim gear, utilizing visible flotation devices, and avoiding jellyfish contact. In the event of a sting, seeking immediate medical care is crucial; applying vinegar is advised to counteract the venom’s effects.
This discovery not only enhances scientific knowledge about regional marine ecosystems but also reinforces the necessity for continuous ocean monitoring to safeguard public health and better understand changes occurring within marine environments.
