New Zealand cricket icon Suzie Bates has declared her retirement from international cricket, which will take effect after the Women’s T20 World Cup in England. The 38-year-old all-rounder will conclude a remarkable two-decade-long career at the top of the sport.

In a statement made on Friday, Bates confirmed that this tournament will mark her final outing for the White Ferns. Throughout her career, she has played in 362 international matches, making her the female cricketer with the most appearances in history across both ODIs and T20Is.

Bates holds the incredible distinction of being the first woman to achieve a remarkable 25,000 runs across all formats. With 4,717 runs, she is also recognized as the leading run-scorer in T20 Internationals. Moreover, she has set records for most catches in women’s ODIs (93) and T20Is (96).

Beginning her domestic career with Otago Sparks at the tender age of 15 in 2003, Bates made her international debut in 2006. She assumed the captaincy of New Zealand in 2011, leading the team in 151 matches.

Her sporting talents transcend cricket, as she also represented New Zealand in basketball during the 2008 Beijing Olympics.

Bates expressed pride in her extensive journey with the White Ferns, aiming to finish her career with another T20 World Cup victory, having clinched her first title two years ago in the UAE.

Current White Ferns captain Amelia Kerr lauded Bates as one of the sport's greats and a significant source of inspiration for her teammates.

The Women’s T20 World Cup is set to commence on June 12 in England.
