In a significant political shift, Raghav Chadha has declared his departure from the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) to join the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), along with six other Members of Parliament. This move is considered a severe blow to AAP leader Arvind Kejriwal, especially as it involves a substantial segment of the party’s representation in the Rajya Sabha.
At a press briefing, Chadha revealed that nearly two-thirds of AAP's ten Rajya Sabha MPs have opted to merge with the BJP, which includes prominent leaders like Harbhajan Singh, Swati Maliwal, and Rajinder Gupta. Chadha has confirmed that all necessary documentation for the merger has been submitted to the Rajya Sabha Chairman, thereby formalizing the transition in accordance with parliamentary regulations.
Notably, this change does not breach India's anti-defection legislation, which allows for such a merger when a minimum of two-thirds of a party's legislators concur. This legal framework safeguards the MPs from facing disqualification despite their change in party allegiance.
Chadha articulated that his decision came after growing disillusionment with AAP, alleging that the party has drifted from its founding anti-corruption principles. He claimed to have invested 15 years in the party but now views it as “corrupt and compromised.” He emphasized that leaving AAP was essential for his commitment to honest politics and the public good.
This political transition comes on the heels of increasing friction between Chadha and AAP's leadership. He was recently removed from his role as deputy leader in the Rajya Sabha, with internal conflicts becoming more apparent. AAP also leveled accusations against him for not backing party strategies in parliamentary matters and for raising trivial issues within the House—claims that Chadha firmly rejected.
In response, AAP officials have condemned the defection, describing it as a betrayal. Senior figure Sanjay Singh remarked that the party had extended opportunities to Chadha while he opted to align with the BJP. Kejriwal also offered a brief remark, accusing the BJP of “betraying the people of Punjab.”
With these MPs' departure, AAP is now left with only three representatives in the Rajya Sabha—Sant Balbir Singh Seechewal, Sanjay Singh, and ND Gupta. This development complicates AAP’s national standing, particularly with forthcoming political challenges approaching.
Speculations indicate that Chadha might be positioned for a significant role within the central government post his official association with the BJP, potentially a ministerial position, though no official word has confirmed this yet.
This shift underscores the ongoing political realignments in India, as internal party strife and strategic realignments continue to reshape the national political arena.
