Investigation into RM230 Million NGO Fund Misappropriation by MACC

The Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) has initiated an intensive investigation focusing on the misappropriation of RM230 million associated with an NGO. The commission is actively tracking the funds through several banking systems to determine the extent of the misuse.

Chief Commissioner Azam Baki reported that the investigation team is in the process of acquiring thorough financial documents from a number of banks. These documents are anticipated to clarify how funds were redirected into private accounts from 2018 onwards.

Preliminary findings suggest that a significant portion of the funds was misappropriated for personal use, including the acquisition of high-value assets such as residential homes, office spaces, and parcels of land.

So far, assets valued at around RM18.36 million have been confiscated, which encompasses various properties, a lavish bungalow, office units, and land across Malaysia.

Additionally, the investigation is broadening its scope to encompass individuals and organizations that may have profited from the embezzled funds. Authorities are considering summoning relatives or other persons for questioning as part of this examination.

The commission has clarified that the funds in question were sourced from public donations, not from religious contributions like zakat. This has raised significant concerns regarding the monitoring and management of charitable funds.

Azam Baki stressed the importance of implementing stricter laws and frameworks to oversee financial transactions in non-profit organizations. He pointed out that the lack of stringent oversight has facilitated the misuse of funds, prompting initiatives to enhance transparency and accountability.
