Sunscreen is essential every day, not just when the sun shines, to safeguard skin from harmful UV rays. Its daily use helps ward off issues like premature aging, sunburn, wrinkles, and even skin cancer.
However, various prevalent myths regarding sunscreen lead many to forgo its application. To clarify the confusion, renowned cosmetologist and aesthetic physician Dr. Karuna Malhotra, founder of Cosmetic Skin and Homeo Clinic, addressed the truth behind six of the most common misconceptions.
Myth 1: Higher SPF ensures better protection
Many people tend to believe that higher SPF guarantees superior sunscreen efficacy. Dr. Malhotra explains that SPF ratings only indicate protection against UVB rays—responsible for sunburn—while UVA rays can contribute to aging and skin damage. “Opt for a broad-spectrum sunscreen that defends against both UVA and UVB rays,” she advises.
Myth 2: Darker skin does not require sunscreen
Some maintain that individuals with darker skin don’t need SPF since melanin offers inherent protection. Dr. Malhotra warns that this belief is misguided. “Melanin does not block UVA rays, which can cause wrinkles and premature aging,” she states, emphasizing the necessity of broad-spectrum sunscreen for all skin types.
Myth 3: No sunscreen needed on cloudy days
Surprisingly, even overcast skies can let through up to 80% of UV rays. Dr. Malhotra remarks, “Skin damage can still occur on cloudy or rainy days. Sunscreen should be a daily ritual, regardless of weather conditions.”
Myth 4: One application of sunscreen lasts all day
Sunscreen’s protective effect is not everlasting. As Dr. Malhotra explains, “It diminishes in effectiveness when exposed to sunlight.” To maintain protection, reapplication every 2–4 hours is crucial, especially for those who are active outdoors or sweating.
Myth 5: Sunscreen is waterproof
“No sunscreen is completely waterproof,” emphasizes Dr. Malhotra. Even products labeled as “water-resistant” lose efficacy after swimming or sweating. “Always reapply after being in water,” she advises, and for optimal results, apply 10–15 minutes before swimming.
Myth 6: Sunscreen isn’t essential during winter
Although colder weather might feel safer, the sun’s rays remain potent. Dr. Malhotra cautions, “During winter, as much as 80% of UV rays can penetrate clouds and fog.” These rays can lead to tanning, pigmentation, and early aging signs. Furthermore, snow and glass reflect sunlight, increasing skin exposure. Year-round sunscreen usage is crucial.
The Bottom Line: Sunscreen is Vital for Healthy Skin
Grasping the reality of sunscreen is key for effective skin protection. Dr. Malhotra notes that sunscreen should not be relied upon solely; additional protective measures such as wearing suitable clothing, seeking shade, and avoiding sun exposure between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. are also essential.
In essence, sunscreen transcends being a mere beauty product—it serves as a year-round shield for your skin. Regardless of the season or weather, integrating sunscreen into your daily routine remains one of the most straightforward ways to maintain youthful, healthy skin for the long haul.
