His Highness Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, the Crown Prince of Dubai, Deputy Prime Minister, Minister of Defence, and Chairman of The Executive Council of Dubai, welcomed Northern Irish golf icon Rory McIlroy on Monday. McIlroy, a three-time champion of the DP World Tour Championship, an integral event of the prestigious “Race to Dubai,” is celebrated for his significant contributions to the sport. This meeting underscored both Dubai’s and the global sports community’s shared dedication to promoting excellence, health, and fitness.

During their exchange, Sheikh Hamdan extended his congratulations to McIlroy for his remarkable achievements in golf. The golfer has topped the “Race to Dubai” rankings six times — specifically in 2012, 2014, 2015, 2022, 2023, and 2024 — securing his status among the legends of the sport. Sheikh Hamdan expressed his best wishes for McIlroy’s performance at the upcoming DP World Tour Championship, set in Dubai from November 13 to 16, 2025. He praised McIlroy’s unwavering dedication, discipline, and sportsmanship, qualities that inspire athletes and fans worldwide.

In gratitude, Rory McIlroy thanked Sheikh Hamdan for his inspiring support. He commended Dubai for its top-notch facilities that empower golfers to excel. Expressing enthusiasm about returning to Dubai, McIlroy aims for his seventh “Race to Dubai” title. He highlighted the UAE’s role in hosting major international tournaments that draw elite talent and foster the growth of golf in the region.

Post-meeting, Rory McIlroy, joined by Omar Sultan Al Olama, Minister of State for Artificial Intelligence, Digital Economy, and Remote Work Applications, expressed his admiration for Dubai’s ambitious vision. The 2025 Masters Champion lauded the Dubai Fitness Challenge (DFC), initiated by Sheikh Hamdan, for motivating residents towards healthier and more active lifestyles. McIlroy pointed out that Dubai’s aspiration to become one of the healthiest cities worldwide reflects the leadership’s commitment to community well-being.

Reflecting on his connection with Dubai, McIlroy stated that the city significantly influenced both his career and personal life. He reminisced about his first professional tournament win at the Dubai Desert Classic in 2009 and noted that he has celebrated more victories in Dubai than in any other city globally. He also highlighted his previous residence in Dubai and early commercial ties with a local brand, Jumeirah, emphasizing the city’s essential role in his golfing journey.

Moreover, McIlroy appreciated the aims of the Dubai Fitness Challenge. He emphasized that the initiative is inclusive, catering to individuals of all ages and fitness backgrounds. He commended Sheikh Hamdan for fostering a fitness culture that motivates everyone to enhance their health. According to McIlroy, DFC exemplifies how sports can unify communities and inspire positive lifestyle shifts, positioning Dubai as a global wellness leader.

McIlroy acknowledged the increasing prominence of golf in this year’s Dubai Fitness Challenge. He conveyed that golf suits those seeking to maintain an active lifestyle, as it melds physical activity with mental focus, all while enjoying outdoor experiences. Golf, he said, can be embraced by everyone, aligning with Dubai’s broader ambition to promote healthy living and sports participation.

As McIlroy gears up for his 14th appearance at the DP World Tour Championship, he prepares to lead the Race to Dubai Rankings for yet another season. His goal is to clinch the title for a record seventh time, reinforcing his legacy as one of the sport’s greatest. McIlroy’s arrival follows his historic win at the Masters Tournament earlier this year, making him the first European golfer to achieve a career Grand Slam.

Having participated in Dubai for nearly two decades, McIlroy has observed the city’s growth into a global epicenter for sports, wellness, and tourism. He credited Sheikh Hamdan’s leadership for this transformation, likening Dubai to a symbol of active living and sporting distinction. This special camaraderie with Sheikh Hamdan has deepened McIlroy’s appreciation for Dubai’s vision in establishing a premier environment for athletes and sports enthusiasts.

The meeting between Sheikh Hamdan and Rory McIlroy highlighted a mutual passion for sports, fitness, and excellence. Both figures recognize the power of sports to unite individuals, inspire ambition, and advocate for healthier lifestyles. Their dialogue signifies the robust relationship between Dubai’s leadership and the international sports community. As McIlroy prepares to compete once again in Dubai, the city eagerly anticipates the next chapter in its evolving legacy as a haven for champions and a beacon of global sporting success.
