Russia and Niger Forces Push Back ISIL Attack on Niamey Airport

Post by : Saif Nasser

Russia has confirmed that its forces helped Niger’s military repel an attack by the Islamic State group on the main airport in Niger’s capital, Niamey. The attack targeted a key transport and security hub, raising concerns about the growing threat of extremist violence in the Sahel region of Africa.

According to Russian officials, the assault was carried out by ISIL fighters late at night. Nigerien forces, supported by Russian military personnel, responded quickly and managed to stop the attackers before they could take control of the airport or cause major damage. Several attackers were killed, others were captured, and a small number of Nigerien soldiers were injured during the clash.

The airport in Niamey is a critical site for both civilian travel and military operations. Any disruption there could have serious effects on national security and daily life. Officials said the quick response prevented panic and ensured that airport operations could continue.

ISIL and other armed groups have been active in parts of Niger and neighboring countries for years. These groups often target military bases, government buildings, and public infrastructure to spread fear and weaken state control. In recent months, attacks in the region have increased, putting pressure on local security forces.

Russia’s role in the operation reflects its expanding presence in West Africa. Niger’s current leadership has strengthened ties with Moscow, especially after reducing cooperation with Western countries. Russian military support is now seen as an important part of Niger’s fight against armed groups.

Niger’s military leaders welcomed the assistance and praised the cooperation between the two forces. Officials said joint efforts like this are necessary to protect the country from ongoing security threats.

The Russian government strongly condemned the ISIL attack and said it remains committed to helping Niger counter terrorism. Moscow has described its involvement as part of a broader effort to support stability and security in Africa.

While the airport attack was successfully repelled, experts warn that extremist groups remain a serious danger in the region. Continued cooperation, intelligence sharing, and strong security measures will be needed to prevent future attacks and protect civilians.

The incident shows how regional security challenges are shaping new international partnerships and highlights the ongoing struggle against militant violence in the Sahel.
