Missile Strikes in Kharkiv and Dnipro Target US-Owned Facility

Missile Strikes in Kharkiv and Dnipro Target US-Owned Facility

Post by : Mina Rahman

On Monday, Russia unleashed several missile attacks on Kharkiv, Ukraine’s second-largest city, damaging vital energy systems and injuring at least one civilian according to local officials.

Five missiles struck various locations within Kharkiv, hitting infrastructure related to heating, electricity, and water services. These assaults coincide with freezing temperatures, aggravating hardships for residents facing ongoing power shortages.

Kharkiv Mayor Ihor Terekhov noted that the strikes appeared to target civilian life instead of military installations, aiming to intimidate the population by plunging the city into darkness throughout winter.

In a related development, an industrial facility owned by US company Bunge in Dnipro was struck by Russian forces, resulting in a significant spill of about 300 metric tons of sunflower oil due to damage to storage units.

According to Dnipro Mayor Borys Filatov, cleanup operations are currently underway, as municipal workers are using sand and gravel to manage the spill, while a major nearby road remains closed for two to three days as they work.

Ukraine’s Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha emphasized that the attack on the US-owned facility was intentional, highlighting that Russian forces have targeted this site multiple times. He commented that such actions demonstrate Russia's pattern of systematically targeting American enterprises in Ukraine.

Sybiha also pointed out that these strikes display Russia's continued dismissal of US-led efforts to resolve the nearly four-year conflict.

Bunge confirmed that no workers were injured in the attack and is currently assessing the damage while collaborating with local authorities to mitigate environmental impact and restore normal operations.

Kharkiv, located close to the Russian border and housing over one million residents, has endured repeated attacks in recent months. Local energy suppliers reported that residents had access to electricity only intermittently even prior to the latest bombings.

Since November, Russia has increased its assault on Ukraine's energy and logistics systems, with significant strikes leaving large areas of Kyiv without heating in late December and causing near-total power outages in Odesa for several days. Heating facilities in both the Chernihiv region and Kherson have also suffered from attacks.
