Mohammed Ben Sulayem, the President of FIA, announced that stakeholders in Formula 1 have reached an agreement on crucial updates for the 2026 regulations.
During a virtual conference involving FIA officials, team leaders, power unit manufacturers, and Formula One Management (FOM), discussions centered on bolstering safety, enhancing performance parity, and elevating the quality of racing.
The revision includes modifications to qualifying energy management, race safety protocols, and power control regulations, along with enhanced strategies for racing in wet conditions. These changes are intended to improve safety and competitiveness on the track.
One significant alteration is the increase in lower energy limit application to 12 races from the previous 8, allowing for better adaptability to varying circuit environments.
Measures to minimize speed disparities among cars while ensuring overtaking opportunities and upholding performance levels were also introduced by the FIA.
To enhance driver visibility during inclement weather, the rear lighting systems have been streamlined, which will assist in quicker reactions and additional safety during wet conditions.
Further tests of the race start systems are planned for the upcoming Miami Grand Prix weekend prior to their final authorization.
These proposals will now undergo an electronic vote by the FIA World Motor Sport Council, with implementation of most changes expected before the Miami Grand Prix on May 3.
Ben Sulayem commended the collaborative efforts of FIA personnel, teams, drivers, and manufacturers for their swift decision-making process.
He emphasized that safety and equitable competition are the FIA's primary concerns, with the updates reflective of data gathered from the season's initial races.
The discussions during the FIA Region I Spring Meeting in Budva, Montenegro, also encompassed broader themes surrounding safe and sustainable mobility across 102 FIA member clubs.
