Early on Saturday, Russia launched a series of missile and drone strikes on Kyiv and various regions across Ukraine, increasing tensions right before an important diplomatic meeting involving Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky and US President Donald Trump.
Residents in Kyiv experienced multiple explosions as air defense systems were engaged to counteract the incoming threats. Ukraine’s military reported that both missiles and drones targeted the capital, along with northeastern and southern parts of the country. Air raid sirens blared for several hours, keeping residents vigilant, but officials indicated there were no immediate damages or power outages.
These assaults occurred as Zelensky readied himself for significant discussions in Florida with Trump, which he deemed essential for outlining a potential plan to bring an end to the ongoing war that erupted following Russia’s invasion in February 2022. This conflict has evolved into the deadliest chapter in Europe since World War II.
Zelensky highlighted that the talks would concentrate on issues of territorial authority in the context of a potential ceasefire—an especially challenging point in ongoing conversations. He announced that a US-supported 20-point peace framework is nearing its conclusion, alongside an agreement for security guarantees with Washington. Kyiv sees these security assurances as crucial for deterring future aggressions.
Trump affirmed that the US is spearheading the peace initiative and stressed that no agreement would come to fruition without his endorsement. He expressed optimism regarding the upcoming discussions and anticipated a conversation with Russian President Vladimir Putin in the near future.
The issue of territory remains the primary hurdle. Russia insists on Ukraine withdrawing from portions of the Donetsk region, while Kyiv maintains that any ceasefire must stabilize the conflict along the current battle lines. Control over the Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant, the largest in Europe, also presents a significant challenge.
A potential compromise on the horizon includes establishing a free economic zone if Ukraine concedes certain territories, though intricate details remain under discussion. Zelensky mentioned he might consider putting the peace initiative to a national referendum if diplomatic backing wanes, contingent upon Russia agreeing to a temporary ceasefire.
While Russia has not commented officially on the recent strikes, high-ranking officials in Moscow have indicated ongoing discussions with US representatives, suggesting that negotiations may be entering a critical phase despite continued hostilities on the ground.
