The Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) have showcased their prowess in the Women’s Premier League (WPL) 2026, achieving a decisive 61-run win against Gujarat Giants, thus confirming their playoff berth. Gautami Naik's exceptional half-century combined with a robust bowling display propelled RCB to their fifth victory in a row this season.
With this triumph, RCB became only the second team, following the Mumbai Indians in 2023, to notch up five consecutive wins in a single WPL season. Moreover, this victory marks RCB’s most significant win by runs in the history of the tournament.
RCB Recovers from Early Challenges
In their first match of the season at Kotambi Stadium in Vadodara, RCB faced an early challenge, stumbling to 9 for 2. Grace Harris was dismissed by Renuka Singh in the opening over, and shortly after, Georgia Voll was bowled attempting a cut shot.
However, Smriti Mandhana and Gautami Naik steadied the innings, leading a careful rebuild. Mandhana countered Ash Gardner’s bowling with a couple of boundaries, while Naik steadily found her footing. The duo formed a vital 50-run partnership by the eighth over.
Gardner finally broke the partnership, dismissing Mandhana for the fourth time in their WPL encounters.
Naik Takes Charge
Naik skillfully anchored the innings, reaching her first WPL half-century off 42 balls, becoming the first uncapped Indian player to achieve this milestone in WPL history. Richa Ghosh boosted the score with three sixes in her explosive 20-ball innings, while Radha Yadav contributed vital late runs.
RCB concluded with a score of 178 for 6, taking advantage of Gujarat Giants' subpar fielding, which included a staggering 21 extras, the second-highest total in WPL.
Giants’ Chase Crumbles Early
In pursuit of 179, Gujarat Giants faced a catastrophic start. Sayali Satghare dismissed both openers in one over, sending Beth Mooney back for just 3 runs and Sophie Devine for a duck. Lauren Bell then clean-bowled Kanika Ahuja, leaving the Giants reeling at 5 for 3.
Anushka Sharma showed temporary resistance but eventually fell to Nadine de Klerk. The Giants soon crumbled to 56 for 6.
Despite Ash Gardner's gritty half-century, which included several boundaries and a six off Bell, the mounting required run rate proved unmanageable. Satghare returned to remove Gardner, concluding with three wickets as the Giants were limited to just 117 for 8.
RCB Moves Forward
RCB’s bowlers executed an evenly distributed performance, culminating in a complete team effort. The victory not only ensured RCB’s advancement to the playoffs but also highlighted their formidable position in WPL 2026.
