The Hajar Mountains in Sharjah have unveiled a remarkable discovery. Researchers from the Environment and Protected Areas Authority (EPAA) have captured evidence of a new and rare ant species, termed Carebara Sharjahensis, also known as the “Sharjah Ant.” This finding marks the first instance of the Carebara genus documented in the UAE and the third of its kind found on the Arabian Peninsula.
Professor Dr. Mustafa Sharaf, from EPAA’s Al Dhaid Wildlife Center, led extensive field surveys in Wadi Shees to reach this groundbreaking conclusion. Despite multiple investigations, only one “soldier” ant specimen was discovered, indicating that this species is adapted to highly specialised subterranean environments, rendering it particularly elusive.
Experts emphasize that the Sharjah Ant possesses distinct characteristics that differentiate it from other ant types. It features prominently developed lateral horns on each side of its head, fine sensory hairs, a consistent yellow body hue, and unique structural elements in its head and thorax. It shares some similarities with a species from Zimbabwe but has enough differing traits to be classified as a separate species.
This discovery highlights Sharjah’s dedication to biodiversity research and environmental conservation. The Hajar Mountains, already noted for their ecological richness in the UAE, continue to unveil rare and endemic species, contributing positively to the emirate’s natural legacy. Ongoing research aims to identify other members of the colony, including queens, males, and workers, believed to reside beneath the surface and within decaying organic matter.
This extraordinary discovery not only illustrates the ecological importance of the Hajar Mountains but also positions Sharjah as an emerging center for specialized scientific inquiry in the region.
