The Detroit Pistons kept their playoff aspirations alive with an impressive 115-94 victory against the Cleveland Cavaliers in Game 6 of the Eastern Conference second-round series on Friday evening. This victory equalizes the series at 3-3, prompting a crucial Game 7 on Sunday in Detroit.
Cade Cunningham was instrumental for the Pistons, leading the way with 21 points, including five shots from beyond the arc. Detroit showcased their dominance in the second half, achieving one of the most significant playoff road victories in history for a team at risk of elimination.
This 21-point triumph matches a 66-year-old NBA playoff record for the greatest Game 6 road victory by a team facing a 3-2 series deficit, a feat last accomplished by the St. Louis Hawks against the Minneapolis Lakers in 1960.
Strong contributions came from Jalen Duren with 15 points and 11 rebounds, while Daniss Jenkins also added 15 points. Veteran Paul Reed stepped up as well, contributing 17 points off the bench.
The Pistons' bench played a crucial role, outscoring Cleveland's reserves 48-19. Duncan Robinson, returning from a back injury, registered 14 points with four three-pointers.
Detroit's tenacious defense proved pivotal, forcing 20 turnovers that led to 28 points. They dominated on the offensive glass, securing 13 offensive rebounds, which translated into 20 second-chance points.
Post-game, Pistons coach J.B. Bickerstaff commended his team's defensive intensity throughout the match.
The Pistons entered halftime with a 54-41 lead and swiftly extended it with a 12-2 scoring burst in the third quarter. Cleveland tried to claw back, narrowing the gap to six points at 74-68, but Detroit countered with a decisive 13-2 scoring run to seize full control.
A missed dunk by Evan Mobley late in the third allowed Marcus Sasser to secure a buzzer-beating layup, giving Detroit an 84-70 advantage heading into the final quarter.
For the Cavaliers, James Harden led with 23 points, while Donovan Mitchell and Mobley each scored 18 points. This loss marked Cleveland’s first home defeat in this postseason.
Mitchell acknowledged that the Cavaliers struggled to keep pace with Detroit’s aggressive opening, and Harden noted the team's inability to find a consistent rhythm on either side of the ball.
The winner of the pivotal Game 7 in Detroit will advance to the Eastern Conference Finals.
