Following high-level talks between Kyrgyz officials and representatives from the World Bank and the International Development Association, Kyrgyzstan has advanced its plans to enhance its water management and irrigation systems. The discussions centered around attracting significant investments to improve the country’s water sector, with the goal of bolstering agriculture, boosting infrastructure, and reinforcing food security.
The meeting, headed by Erlist Akunbekov, Deputy Chairman of the Cabinet of Ministers of the Kyrgyz Republic and Minister of Water Resources, Agriculture and Processing Industry, addressed several vital projects focused on enhancing irrigation infrastructure and promoting the efficient use of water resources nationwide.
A central topic of the dialogue was the proposed National Irrigation Investment Program, through which Kyrgyzstan aims to secure around 193 million US dollars in financing. This investment is envisioned to modernize irrigation networks, enhance water supply systems, and aid in agricultural productivity across various regions.
Government officials reported that the irrigation investment initiative is integral to Kyrgyzstan's overarching strategy for sustainable economic and agricultural growth. They asserted that modern irrigation systems are imperative to improve crop yield, bolster rural communities, and guarantee national food security amidst evolving climate challenges.
In addition, the discussions encompassed two critical regional irrigation projects. Plans were reviewed to prepare design and estimate documents for the Omuko Irrigation Canal in At-Bashy district of Naryn Region and the Chon Talas Canal in Bakai-Ata and Aitmatov districts of Talas Region.
Officials noted that grant funding of 650,000 US dollars will be dedicated to drafting these technical documents. The anticipated projects are expected to enhance the irrigation capacity in agricultural regions that rely on reliable water supplies for farming and local economic development.
World Bank and International Development Association representatives expressed strong support for Kyrgyzstan’s modernization agenda for its water infrastructure. Collaborative discussions were held on enhancing cooperation to ensure future investments are executed effectively and sustainably.
At the meeting's conclusion, Erlist Akunbekov, alongside World Bank officials, signed formal protocols delineating the agreements and plans for future cooperation established during negotiations. This signing signifies another advancement in Kyrgyzstan’s initiatives to draw international financial backing for vital infrastructure and agricultural development projects.
The Kyrgyz government stressed that enhancing irrigation systems and water management remains a top priority as the nation endeavors to improve food production, promote rural development, and ensure long-term economic stability.
