Colombia is facing one of its most difficult diplomatic moments in years after a sharp public clash between President Gustavo Petro and U.S. President Donald Trump over the U.S. operation in Venezuela. The dispute has placed Colombia, long a close ally of Washington, in an uncomfortable position between defending national sovereignty and protecting vital ties with the United States.
President Petro reacted strongly after U.S. forces captured Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro. He described the action as a serious violation of Latin American sovereignty and compared it to some of the darkest moments in world history. His words were among the strongest criticisms voiced by any world leader against the Trump administration’s move.
For decades, Colombia and the United States have worked closely together. The partnership has focused on fighting drug trafficking, weakening armed rebel groups, and supporting development in rural areas. Over the past 20 years, the U.S. has provided Colombia with billions of dollars in military and economic aid. This cooperation remains crucial for both countries.
Tensions rose quickly when Trump suggested that a U.S. military operation in Colombia “sounds good,” comments that alarmed many Colombians. In response, Petro called for nationwide protests to defend Colombia’s sovereignty. Thousands of people gathered in public squares, chanting slogans in support of independence and peace.
However, the situation took an unexpected turn. Just before addressing the crowd in Bogotá, Petro said he had a friendly phone call with Trump. He told supporters that he had softened his speech after the conversation. Petro said he explained to Trump that he was committed to fighting drug trafficking and called for direct dialogue between the two governments.
Trump later confirmed the call, describing it as an honor and inviting Petro to visit the White House. The sudden shift showed how quickly relations can change when both sides see a need to step back from open conflict.
Despite the calmer tone, the underlying risks remain. Colombia depends heavily on U.S. support to fight drug cartels and armed groups. At the same time, Petro has built his political image as a leader who stands up to foreign pressure. With elections approaching, his strong stance against Trump has gained him sympathy at home.
Trump and Petro have clashed repeatedly in recent months. Petro has criticized U.S. immigration policies, spoken out against U.S. actions in Gaza, and opposed American military moves in the region. Trump has responded with harsh personal attacks, sanctions, visa restrictions, and threats to cut aid and impose tariffs.
This high-stakes exchange has worried Colombian officials. While Petro speaks loudly on sovereignty, other members of his government have quietly worked to reassure U.S. security agencies that cooperation on drug control will continue. Defense and foreign officials have stressed the importance of dialogue and avoiding escalation.
Experts say a U.S. military move against Colombia is unlikely, since Colombia is a democratic country with strong institutions. Still, Trump’s aggressive language has raised fears and forced Colombia to prepare for worst-case scenarios, even while pushing for diplomacy.
In the end, Colombia is walking a fine line. Petro wants to defend national pride and shape his political legacy, but the country cannot afford to lose its most important security partner. The recent phone call between Petro and Trump eased immediate tensions, but the episode shows how fragile the relationship has become.
As Petro told supporters after speaking with Trump, peace must come through dialogue. For now, Colombia may rest easier, but the challenges of balancing principle, politics, and partnership are far from over.
