Ottawa Prepares for Plummeting Temperatures and Snowfall This Week

Post by : Mina Rahman

As southern Ontario grapples with an early winter lake-effect snowstorm, Ottawa has managed to avoid the worst of the snowfall. Yet, the city is bracing for severe winter conditions, as temperatures are projected to drop significantly in the coming days.

On Sunday, daytime highs are expected to hover around 0°C, but Environment Canada predicts that daytime temperatures will stay below freezing as the week unfolds. By Thursday night, the mercury may plunge to a frigid -13°C, marking one of the coldest durations of the season so far.

The intense cold will be exacerbated by high winds, with southwest gusts reaching up to 50 km/h anticipated throughout Sunday before shifting to the northwest after midnight. While winds may calm down a bit on Monday, the wind chill could make it feel as cold as -14°C during the early morning, posing added risks for those outdoors and traveling.

Snow is also on the horizon, with Ottawa potentially receiving 5 to 10 cm of snow by Sunday’s end, although forecasts remain uncertain. Areas in eastern Ontario—including regions along Lake Ontario and the St. Lawrence River—might experience a mix of snow and rain before returning to snow.

Local authorities are urging residents to stay vigilant. The Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) advise drivers to be prepared for quick changes in road conditions, urging them to adjust their speeds and driving practices for safety.

As cold temperatures, strong winds, and building snowfall loom, Ottawa's residents are encouraged to bundle up, exercise caution while traveling, and stay informed on weather updates for any rapid changes.
