Canada Supports New Lithium Refinery to Enhance EV Battery Supply Chain

Post by : Shweta

In a pivotal move towards advancing its clean energy goals, the Government of Canada has endorsed the establishment of a lithium refining facility by Mangrove Lithium in Delta, British Columbia. This initiative is part of a larger effort to create a self-sufficient battery supply chain and diminish reliance on international processing resources.

Officially the first commercial electrochemical lithium refining facility in North America, this plant in Delta is poised to deliver battery-grade lithium for approximately 25,000 electric vehicles (EVs) each year. This development significantly bolsters Canada’s processing capacity for one of the key minerals essential for modern clean technologies.

Lithium is vital in powering EV batteries by enabling them to store greater energy and ensuring efficient performance. As the demand skyrockets due to the global shift towards electric mobility and renewable energy, nations are racing to establish dependable supply chains. With approximately 6.5 million tonnes of lithium resources, Canada ranks as the seventh-largest producer globally and is focused on refining more of its supply within its borders.

To facilitate the project, the Canadian government has provisionally approved funding of up to $21.9 million via its Critical Minerals Research Development and Demonstration program. This support aims to bridge the gap between raw mineral extraction and the creation of battery-ready materials, addressing a crucial missing element in Canada’s clean energy framework.

Government officials highlight that this facility will enhance energy security, generate employment opportunities, and foster long-term economic advancement. By developing a comprehensive battery supply chain, Canada seeks to establish itself as a leader in clean technology while reducing dependency on concentrated international processing markets.

This project also underlines the government's broader strategy to harness the economic potential of critical minerals while aiding the transition to a low-carbon economy. As the demand for EVs and grid storage escalates, such initiatives are expected to be vital in shaping Canada’s sustainable energy and manufacturing landscape.
