Oman's persistent diplomatic initiatives have successfully led to the release of nine Filipino sailors who had been held in Yemen for several months after their ship, the MV Eternity C, sank in the Red Sea earlier this year. This transfer to Omani authorities marks a significant milestone in a prolonged case that began in mid-2025.
The operation was the result of continuous collaboration between Muscat and the Philippine Department of Foreign Affairs, according to the Omani outlet Atheer. Officials from the Philippine Embassy and the Migrant Workers Office in Muscat are currently arranging travel documents and logistics for the sailors' return.
The issue gained wider diplomatic attention in July when Philippine Foreign Secretary Maria Theresa Lazaro discussed it with Oman's Foreign Minister Sayyid Badr bin Hamad Al Busaidi. A follow-up conversation in November re-established communications, leading to negotiations with Yemeni authorities.
After extensive discussions, the crew were officially handed over to Omani custody and safely transported out of Yemen. The repatriation is anticipated to proceed swiftly, with families in the Philippines already notified.
This event underscores Oman’s rising role as a neutral mediator in regional conflicts. By fostering continued dialogue amid complex crises, Muscat continues to contribute significantly to alleviating humanitarian challenges and promoting pathways to peaceful resolutions.
