Oman Unveils Insightful Publication on Russia's 19th-Century Relations

Post by : Mara Rahim

The National Records and Archives Authority (NRAA) in Oman has officially unveiled a new publication titled "Oman-Russia Relations in the Nineteenth Century AD – A Documentary Study Based on Russian Archives." This initiative aligns with NRAA’s commitment to enhancing Omani and Arab scholarly resources through meticulously documented historical materials that support research into Oman’s diplomatic heritage.

Drawing from a collection of 2,852 Russian documents, which include official correspondence, reports, memoranda, maps, and images, the book offers an extensive overview of the diplomatic and trade relations between Oman and Russia during the 19th century, emphasizing the strategic relevance of Omani ports in global maritime trade.

Organized into three primary chapters, this work traces the evolution of diplomatic and trade relationships, highlights Russian influences in the Gulf, and outlines the political, economic, and social frameworks of Oman during that period. It also features more than 50 rare archival documents from Russia, alongside comprehensive indexes to assist scholars in navigating the contents.

Dr. Hamad bin Mohammed Al Dhoyani, the Chairman of NRAA, highlighted the significance of the publication in showcasing Oman’s historical role and the importance of Russian documents in comprehending international relations. The author, Dr. Dharar Mohammed Fadhl Al Mawla, noted that it took nearly a decade to translate and authenticate these materials, offering novel insights into Oman’s past beyond the narratives of British and French sources.

Dr. Ahlam bint Hamoud Al Jahwari, Director Specialist for Documentary Studies, emphasized that this release presents Russian archival resources to Arabic-speaking scholars for the very first time. The analysis covering 1792–1917 illustrates Oman’s expanding political and economic ties with Russia and its vital role in historical trade routes.

This publication serves as a valuable resource for scholars seeking to deepen their understanding of Oman’s international history while fulfilling the authority's objective of facilitating access to global historical records for the Arab research community, all while adhering to rigorous academic standards.
