In a gripping contest at Bay Oval, Mount Maunganui, New Zealand secured a thrilling four-wicket victory against England in the first ODI on Sunday. Despite an impressive century from England's Harry Brook, the Kiwis exhibited remarkable resilience, successfully chasing a target of 224 runs in just 36.4 overs, thus taking a 1-0 lead in the three-match ODI series.
The match was filled with drama as New Zealand faced early setbacks. Kane Williamson, in his first match since March, was dismissed on the very first ball. At 70-4, England appeared to dominate, but Daryl Mitchell, with an unbeaten 78, along with Michael Bracewell’s solid innings of 51, steadied the ship. Their partnership proved pivotal, further bolstered by Mitch Santner’s brisk 27 that clinched the win.
Meanwhile, England's Harry Brook stood out with a spectacular 135 runs off just 101 deliveries, showcasing exceptional counter-attacking skills. Coming in at a precarious 56-6, Brook single-handedly resurrected the innings. With Jamie Overton contributing a respectable 46, England finished with a total of 223 runs in 35.2 overs, presenting a challenging target given the conditions.
New Zealand bowlers had made early inroads into England's lineup, with Zak Foulkes emerging as the leading wicket-taker with figures of 4-41. Alongside Matt Henry, who claimed 2-53, the duo effectively dismantled England's batting depth. However, Brook's explosive innings, featuring 11 sixes, kept England's hopes alive.
Post-match, New Zealand’s captain Mitch Santner expressed pride in his team's performance. “There was still a lot in the wicket. We lost more wickets than we’d have liked, but the partnership between Daryl and Michael was crucial,” he noted. He praised Foulkes as well, stating, “The way Zak swung it was impressive—it must have been a nightmare to face.”
Harry Brook, despite the loss, shared his satisfaction with his own performance, stating, “We didn’t start well, but I aimed to counter-attack. It worked today, although we fell short with our bowling in the middle phases.”
With this victory, New Zealand gains an early advantage in the ODI series following their defeat in the preceding T20 series. The second ODI will be held in Hamilton on Wednesday, where England will seek to bounce back and even the series.
