Nepal Faces Escalating Unrest; India Secures Borders Amid Chaos

Post by : Mina Rahman

Tensions have surged in parts of Nepal along the Indian border, leading to heightened security measures. The trouble started in Birgunj, a key town in Nepal's Parsa district, following a widely circulated video that reportedly included remarks offensive to specific religious groups. Authorities responded swiftly, imposing a curfew in Birgunj, nestled next to Raxaul in Bihar, India.

The turmoil originally began in Kamala Municipality of Dhanusha district, where two individuals were alleged to have shared a video deemed controversial. Local residents, outraged by its content, turned the men over to police, stating that the video jeopardized communal peace. However, the violence escalated, culminating in the vandalism of a mosque in the Sakhuwa Maran locality of Kamala.

Hindu groups further asserted that they were victims of derogatory remarks aimed at their deities, which inflamed tensions even more. Subsequent protests devolved into violence, with protesters clashing with police, resulting in damage to a police station. In retaliation, law enforcement deployed tear gas to disperse the crowds.

With escalating tensions, India implemented precautionary measures by sealing the border, limiting civilian movements to emergency services only. Security personnel increased their vigilance at critical crossing points such as the Maitri Bridge, conducting comprehensive checks on travelers. Additionally, dog units and heightened patrols have been mobilized in nearby border areas as a precaution.

The worsening security situation has prompted a significant number of Indian migrant workers in Nepal to head back home. Businesses in Birgunj have temporarily closed, and locals are shunning public areas as the curfew remains in effect. Many are choosing to wait for stability before returning to work.

Authorities are actively monitoring the developments, striving to restore order and inhibit any further disturbances.
