NATO has raised serious concerns about the nuclear policies of Russia and China, urging both nations to work with the United States to improve global security. The statement comes at a time when tensions between major powers are rising and the world is preparing for an important international meeting on nuclear weapons control.
According to NATO, Russia has used strong and threatening language related to nuclear weapons and has stepped away from key arms control agreements. The alliance also criticised China for expanding its nuclear arsenal without clear transparency.
NATO leaders said that cooperation between major powers is necessary to reduce risks and prevent misunderstandings. They called for more openness, better communication, and stronger efforts to maintain stability. These steps are important to avoid a situation where countries increase their nuclear weapons without limits.
The concerns were shared ahead of a major review conference of the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons (NPT), which will take place at the United Nations in New York City. The NPT is one of the most important global agreements aimed at stopping the spread of nuclear weapons and promoting peaceful use of nuclear energy.
NATO has expressed strong support for this treaty and said it remains a key part of global security. However, past meetings have struggled to reach agreement, showing how difficult it is for countries to find common ground on such sensitive issues.
A NATO official also pointed to Russia’s use of a nuclear-capable missile in the conflict in Ukraine as an example of what the alliance calls “irresponsible nuclear signalling.” Such actions, according to NATO, increase fear and uncertainty around the world.
Russia, on the other hand, has said it remains a responsible nuclear power and has criticised NATO for actions it believes increase tension. China has also rejected criticism, saying its nuclear program is limited and meant only for national security.
The situation has become more complex after the expiry of major arms control agreements like the New START. This treaty had set limits on nuclear weapons held by the United States and Russia. Without such agreements, experts warn that the risk of a new arms race could increase.
The world’s largest nuclear powers include Russia and the United States, followed by China and other countries like France and the United Kingdom. Together, their decisions play a major role in shaping global peace and security.
NATO has stressed that it sees itself as a defensive alliance. It says its goal is not to threaten others but to protect its members and support global stability. At the same time, it has defended actions taken by its members, saying they are responses to growing threats.
The call for cooperation shows that even in times of tension, dialogue remains important. Without communication, misunderstandings can grow, and risks can increase. Many experts believe that renewed talks between the United States, Russia, and China are necessary to avoid further escalation.
The upcoming conference will be closely watched by the international community. Leaders will try to find ways to strengthen existing agreements and possibly create new ones. However, reaching a common agreement will not be easy due to differences in interests and trust.
The situation highlights a larger challenge facing the world today. As technology advances and global tensions rise, managing nuclear weapons becomes even more important. Countries must balance their security needs with the responsibility to avoid conflict.
NATO’s message is clear: cooperation, transparency, and dialogue are key to maintaining peace. Whether these goals can be achieved will depend on the willingness of major powers to work together in the coming months.
