Mount Semeru Volcano Erupts in Java, Leading to Mass Evacuations

Post by : Raina Nasser

Mount Semeru, a prominent volcano located in eastern Java, Indonesia, erupted on Wednesday afternoon, releasing ash and volcanic gases soaring over 13 kilometers (eight miles) into the atmosphere. The explosive event inflicted damage on nearby houses and at least one educational institution, prompting the evacuation of nearly 190 individuals from the volcano's slopes and the establishment of temporary shelters for many others.

The eruption occurred around mid-afternoon, plunging surrounding areas into a cloak of darkness. Locals expressed their fear, with resident Faiz Ramadhani stating that the eruption made it feel like midnight despite it being only 4 PM. Some homes were partially buried in volcanic ash and rock fragments, with one elementary school entirely destroyed. Nurul Yakin Pribadi, leader of Supiturang village, reported his residence being covered by a meter-high layer of volcanic debris.

As of Thursday, though volcanic activity had somewhat diminished, it remained unpredictable, as stated by the Indonesian Geological Agency. Authorities focused on disaster management reported that close to 900 individuals were lodged in shelters set up in schools, mosques, and community centers. The trauma led many to prefer staying in shelters overnight.

Three individuals suffered burn injuries, and rescue efforts were ongoing for hikers stranded in campsites near the volcano. Rudijanto Tjahja Nugraha, the head of Semeru National Park, emphasized that evacuations were happening continuously to ensure public safety.

Mount Semeru has a notorious history; its 2021 eruption resulted in over 50 fatalities and severe damage to more than 5,000 homes, displacing nearly 10,000 people. Indonesia, positioned on the Pacific "Ring of Fire," is home to nearly 130 active volcanoes due to tectonic plate activities, rendering the area susceptible to regular volcanic and seismic events.

Authorities are currently evaluating the overall damage and have advised residents to remain vigilant and adhere to safety guidelines as volcanic activities remain variable.
