tens of thousands of people gathered in Sydney, Australia, for a pro-Palestinian rally organized by the Palestine Action Group. The demonstration took place in the city's business district after a court blocked plans to hold it at the Sydney Opera House. Organizers estimated the crowd at around 30,000, while police did not provide an official count.

The rally was part of a nationwide series of protests, with approximately 27 events held across Australia on the same day. Participants expressed strong support for the Palestinian cause and raised concerns about the ongoing situation in Gaza.

Ceasefire in Gaza: Holding or Temporary?

The rally coincided with the first phase of a U.S.-brokered ceasefire between Israel and Hamas in Gaza. Early reports indicated that Israeli troops were pulling back, and the ceasefire appeared to be holding. However, many protesters remained skeptical about its longevity.

Amal Naser, an organizer of the Sydney rally, stated, "Even if the ceasefire holds, Israel is still conducting a military occupation of Gaza and the West Bank." Naser and other demonstrators emphasized that the ceasefire should not be seen as a resolution to the broader issues facing Palestinians.

Protesters Demand Action

Participants in the rally carried Palestinian flags, wore keffiyeh scarves, and marched through closed city streets. They chanted slogans calling for an end to the occupation and for the Australian government to take a stronger stance on the issue.

Protester Abbi Jordan expressed doubts about the effectiveness of past ceasefires, saying, "Israel always breaks every ceasefire they've ever done." Jordan and others called on the Australian government to impose sanctions on Israel in response to its actions in Gaza and the West Bank.

Diverse Participation and Peaceful Demonstration

The rally attracted a diverse group of individuals, including families, students, and activists. Despite the large turnout, the demonstration remained peaceful, with no arrests reported by police.

The event highlighted the growing public interest in the Palestinian cause and the desire for a more active role by the Australian government in advocating for Palestinian rights.

Criticism from Jewish Groups

The rally faced criticism from some Jewish organizations in Australia. The Executive Council of Australian Jewry accused the organizers of undermining peace efforts and promoting a one-sided view of the conflict. They expressed concern that such demonstrations could exacerbate tensions and hinder efforts toward a peaceful resolution.

Background: Two Years of Conflict

The conflict between Israel and Hamas began in October 2023, following a deadly attack by Hamas that resulted in the deaths of 1,200 Israelis. In retaliation, Israel launched a military offensive in Gaza, leading to widespread destruction and a significant loss of life. According to Gaza officials, over 67,000 Palestinians have been killed since the conflict began.

The humanitarian situation in Gaza remains dire, with shortages of food, medicine, and essential services. International organizations have called for increased aid and efforts to address the underlying issues contributing to the ongoing violence.

Global Solidarity and Future Protests

The Sydney rally is part of a broader movement of global solidarity with the Palestinian people. Similar demonstrations have taken place in cities around the world, including London, Paris, and New York, reflecting widespread concern over the situation in Gaza and the West Bank.

Organizers of the Sydney rally indicated plans for future protests and actions to continue raising awareness and advocating for Palestinian rights. They emphasized the importance of sustained pressure on governments and international bodies to address the root causes of the conflict and work toward a just and lasting peace.
