Venezuelan Opposition Figure Machado Involved in Sea Incident

Post by : Bianca Suleiman

Maria Corina Machado, the Venezuelan opposition figure and Nobel Peace Prize nominee, experienced a vertebral fracture during a treacherous sea voyage from Venezuela to Norway last week. The 58-year-old political leader faced extreme dangers while navigating turbulent waters in a small fishing boat to attend the esteemed ceremony in Oslo.

Reports indicate that Machado’s vessel encountered fierce waves, rendering the journey exceedingly perilous. Her spokeswoman, Claudia Macera, confirmed the injury and stated that no additional information will be provided beyond what was reported by the Norwegian newspaper Aftenposten.

Despite her injury, Machado exhibited incredible strength upon reaching Oslo. Soon after arriving in the early hours of Thursday, she sought to connect with supporters outside her hotel, bravely scaling a barrier despite her fractured vertebra.

Machado had voiced fears for her safety during the voyage, underscoring the life-threatening conditions of her travel. Medical assistance was quickly administered at Oslo University Hospital in Ulleval, where she received a thorough examination from doctors.

Unfortunately, her injury hindered her attendance at the Nobel Peace Prize ceremony on Wednesday, postponing her much-anticipated participation in this globally significant event. Her resilience has garnered admiration from supporters and observers, acknowledging the profound symbolism of her arrival despite the seriousness of her condition.
