Cardiologist Warns: Lack of Sleep Impacts Weight Loss Efforts

Post by : Saif Nasser

Weight loss can be more complex than simply eating less and exercising more. Many individuals diligently walk, hit the gym, and select healthy meals, yet still fail to achieve their desired outcomes. Dr. Sanjay Bhojraj, a cardiologist and functional medicine specialist with two decades of experience, points out that inadequate sleep could be a significant factor.

Initially, Dr. Bhojraj believed that eating clean, engaging in cardio, weightlifting, and calorie counting would suffice for weight loss. He practiced these methods himself and recommended them to his patients. However, many still experienced weight gain or persistent fatigue despite their efforts. This led him to reassess the underlying biological processes.

Dr. Bhojraj emphasized that weight loss transcends diet and exercise; it involves metabolic inflammation. This condition arises when the body endures prolonged stress, with poor sleep emerging as a major contributor. Disturbed sleep elevates cortisol, the stress hormone, while insulin levels also spike. Sustained high levels of these hormones push the body into a fat-storage mode, thus impeding weight reduction.

Additionally, seemingly healthy processed foods and daily emotional stress can exacerbate this issue. Consequently, individuals may feel perpetually fatigued, experience a sluggish metabolism, and store unwanted fat. Dr. Bhojraj insists that merely eating less won't resolve the dilemma; adequate rest is vital for the body to heal, digest efficiently, and metabolize fat effectively.

After realizing this, he adjusted his methodology. He encouraged his patients to first enhance their sleep habits. Recommendations included winding down before bed, steering clear of screens in the evening, and ensuring sufficient rest to wake up revitalized. Gentle morning stretches or walks were also suggested to naturally awaken the body.

Dr. Bhojraj noted that when his patients improved their sleep and reduced stress levels, they experienced better heart health. Over approximately 12 weeks, several lost up to 35 pounds of stubborn fat, saw their blood pressure decrease, and reported feeling rejuvenated and more energetic.

His clear message is that for longevity and maintaining a healthy weight, one must prioritize sleep. Proper rest isn't a luxury; it's crucial to health just like proper nutrition and physical activity.
