Mohammad Kaif Questions Team Selection as Arshdeep Singh Sits Out ODI Series

Post by : Saif Nasser

India cricketer Mohammad Kaif has raised serious questions about India’s team selection after pacer Arshdeep Singh was left out of the first two One Day International matches against New Zealand. Kaif expressed concern over the decision to play Prasidh Krishna instead, saying the move could hurt India’s long-term plans, especially with the 2027 World Cup in mind.

India played the first two matches of the series in Vadodara and Rajkot, choosing three specialist fast bowlers — Mohammed Siraj, Harshit Rana, and Prasidh Krishna. Arshdeep Singh, known for his ability to take wickets at crucial moments, was not included in either match. India lost the second ODI, which has made the debate over team selection even stronger.

Speaking on his YouTube channel, Kaif questioned why Arshdeep was being ignored while Prasidh continued to get chances. He pointed out that Prasidh often gives away too many runs and has only one or two standout games. Kaif said Arshdeep is a proven wicket-taker and should be trusted more in pressure situations.

Kaif also said that if India wants to win the 2027 World Cup, the team must learn how to defend lower scores. He explained that in big tournaments, teams will not always score 300 runs. Sometimes, totals like 270 or 280 will have to be defended through smart bowling and discipline.

According to Kaif, blaming losses on low scores or conditions like dew is not the right approach. He said dew is a common factor in many matches and teams must learn to bowl well despite it. He urged the players and management to focus more on finding ways to win matches rather than discussing external excuses.

Kaif specifically called on head coach Gautam Gambhir and captain Shubman Gill to rethink their strategy for the final ODI of the series, which will be played in Indore. With the series tied and on the line, he believes India should focus on execution rather than experimenting with players.

India will take confidence from their strong record at the Holkar Stadium in Indore, where they have won all five previous ODI matches. Victories at the venue include wins against teams like England, Australia, South Africa, and the West Indies.

As the series decider approaches, the spotlight remains firmly on India’s team selection. Kaif’s comments have sparked fresh debate about balance, consistency, and preparation for future tournaments. Whether the management makes changes or sticks with their current plan will be closely watched by fans and experts alike.
