Harvard University has experienced a notable shift in its global standing, now occupying the third position in the latest CWTS Leiden Ranking 2025 for Science. This year, Zhejiang University and Shanghai Jiao Tong University from China have secured the top two spots, signifying the impressive ascent of Chinese universities in the realm of international research.
This edition of the rankings not only sees Harvard in third place but also reveals that the top nine slots are exclusively held by Chinese institutions. This marks a significant departure from previous trends where American universities were predominantly featured. For over ten years, Harvard established itself as a leader in global science rankings, especially during its peak between 2006 and 2009, when it was ranked first, with the University of Toronto and the University of Michigan following closely behind.
Recently, however, prominent American universities have witnessed a marked decline in their global standings. Six renowned institutions, including the University of Michigan, UCLA, Johns Hopkins, the University of Washington-Seattle, the University of Pennsylvania, and Stanford University, have dropped out of the top 15 entirely. Harvard, which was first surpassed by Zhejiang University in the 2019-2022 rankings, has retained its position at third in the 2020-2023 cycle.
The CWTS Leiden Ranking, conducted by the Centre for Science and Technology Studies at Leiden University in the Netherlands, offers comprehensive evaluations of the scientific output and research impacts of over 1,500 top universities worldwide. Its Traditional Edition utilizes data from the Web of Science database.
In India, VIT has taken the lead, followed by IIT Kharagpur, IIT Delhi, IIT Bombay, and IIT Madras, reflecting India's expanding footprint in the competitive arena of global scientific research.
The current rankings not only underscore the growing authority of Chinese universities but also illuminate a transformation in global research dynamics, with well-established American institutions ceding ground to swiftly progressing Asian universities.
