Syria’s Foreign Minister, Asaad al-Shaibani, spoke out strongly on Wednesday against Israel’s attacks on southern Syria. These attacks happened after two rockets were fired into Israeli land during the night. Al-Shaibani said Israel’s strikes were meant to cause trouble and make Syria less stable.
Israel carried out air strikes after their military said two projectiles came from Syria. These were the first rockets fired from Syria since the fall of its long-time leader, Bashar al-Assad, in December. Two unknown groups claimed they launched the rockets. Syria’s government denied they were responsible and said they do not want to threaten anyone.
Israel’s Defence Minister, Israel Katz, blamed Syria’s leader for the rocket attacks. There were no reports of injuries or damage in Israel. The rockets fell in open areas, but they caused air raid sirens to sound in the southern Golan Heights. This area was taken by Israel from Syria in 1967 and later made part of Israel in 1981.
In response, the Israeli military said they hit “weapons” belonging to the Syrian government. Al-Shaibani said the Israeli strikes were “provocations” meant to harm Syria’s progress and peace. He warned that such actions give illegal groups a chance to cause more chaos.
At a news conference in Damascus, al-Shaibani said Syria wants peace and rebuilding, not war. Syria’s official news agency, SANA, called the Israeli attack a clear violation of Syria’s land and said it makes tensions worse in the region.
The Syrian government said it cannot confirm if rockets were actually fired from Syria. They blamed many groups trying to create problems in the area. Katz from Israel said he holds Syria’s president responsible for any attacks on Israel.
Syria’s interim president, Ahmed al-Sharaa, once led a group that helped overthrow Assad. After Assad was removed, Israel moved into a UN-controlled buffer zone in the Golan Heights and has since hit many military targets inside Syria. Israel says these attacks stop dangerous weapons from reaching Syria’s new leaders, who Israel calls jihadists.
One group, named “Martyr Mohammed al-Deif Brigades” after a Hamas leader killed by Israel, shared a video they said showed the rockets hitting the Golan Heights. Another group, called the “Islamic Resistance Front in Syria,” also claimed responsibility for firing the rockets. This group is new and wants to fight Israel from southern Syria. Reporters could not confirm these claims.
SANA said Israel’s shelling targeted the Yarmuk Basin area in the west of Daraa province. The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights reported that farming land was hit but did not say if anyone was hurt.
Since taking power, President Sharaa said Syria does not want war with its neighbors and asked the world to pressure Israel to stop attacking.
An analyst named Bassam al-Suleiman said that Iran and its militias benefit from this conflict. He explained that Israel prefers Syria to be weak, but a strong government in Damascus goes against Israel’s interests. Israel’s attacks on Syrian military sites stop Syria from becoming strong enough to control its own country.
Syria and Israel have technically been at war since 1948. Last month, US President Donald Trump lifted some sanctions on Syria and hoped that Syria and Israel might one day have normal relations, but experts think this is unlikely.
Last week, US envoy Thomas Barrack visited Damascus and suggested starting talks with a “non-aggression agreement” to help ease tensions between Syria and Israel.
