Heriot-Watt University Dubai is set to host an important global event, the Social Capital 2026 Conference, from March 26 to March 28, 2026. This conference will bring together leading experts, researchers, and policymakers from around the world to discuss social capital—the networks, relationships, and trust that help communities and societies grow stronger and more connected.
The event is organised by the International Social Capital Association (ISCA). This is the first time the conference will be held, creating a new global platform for exchanging ideas, research, and experiences about social capital. It aims to help people understand how strong communities, trust, and human connections can improve lives and make societies more resilient.
One of the most notable speakers at the conference is Professor Robert D. Putnam, a famous political scientist from Harvard University. He has written well-known books such as Making Democracy Work, Bowling Alone, and The Upswing. His work has helped people around the world understand the importance of civic engagement, trust, and community life. In recognition of his contribution, he received the National Humanities Medal from former U.S. President Barack Obama in 2012.
The conference will also feature other world-renowned experts who will share their insights on how social capital can influence democracy, create economic opportunities, and strengthen social cohesion. Together, the speakers will explain why trust, networks, and human relationships are essential for building resilient societies that can handle challenges and thrive.
Professor Dame Heather McGregor, Provost and Vice Principal of Heriot-Watt University Dubai, said, “We are honoured to host such distinguished voices at the inaugural Social Capital 2026 conference. This is a rare opportunity to learn from some of the world’s most influential thinkers. Academics and practitioners from around the globe will share ideas that can help create stronger, more connected societies.”
Professor Putnam also expressed his excitement: “In today’s digital world, it is human connection that truly sustains our societies. This conference is a chance to explore how trust and relationships can help communities grow stronger worldwide.”
Tristan Claridge, Director of the Institute of Social Capital, highlighted the conference’s purpose: “Social Capital 2026 brings together top scholars, practitioners, and policymakers, offering a global platform for collaboration. This is a unique chance to share and refine ideas about social capital, helping shape a more connected and resilient future.”
Besides keynote speeches, the conference will include workshops, panel discussions, and presentations by academics and experts from around the world. Participants will have the opportunity to learn about innovative research, discuss practical solutions, and explore ways to strengthen the role of social capital in society.
Overall, the Social Capital 2026 Conference promises to be a major event that will highlight how communities and societies can benefit from strong human connections, networks, and trust. Dubai will host experts from many countries, making this conference a unique gathering to discuss ideas that can shape the future of societies globally.
