Iraq's New Parliament Begins Work After November Elections

Iraq's New Parliament Begins Work After November Elections

Post by : Saif Nasser

Iraq’s newly elected parliament met for the first time on Monday in Baghdad, marking the start of a critical process to form a new government after the national elections in November. Lawmakers gathered in the capital’s parliamentary building to begin discussions and take initial steps toward leadership appointments.

During the first session, the parliament is expected to elect a speaker and two deputies, positions that will help guide the legislative body through the upcoming months. Following this, Iraq’s new president must be chosen within 30 days of the parliament’s first meeting. The president plays a key role in asking the largest parliamentary bloc to form a government, a process that often takes several months in Iraq due to complex political alliances and negotiations.

Iraq’s political system is known for coalition-based governance. No single party usually wins an outright majority, meaning that different political groups must work together to form a functioning government. The selection of a president, speaker, and deputies is therefore an important early step in shaping the country’s political direction.

The new parliament faces high expectations from citizens who are seeking stability, better services, and reforms after years of political unrest and economic challenges. Many Iraqis hope that this new legislative term will address urgent issues such as electricity shortages, unemployment, and public safety.

The first session also serves as a symbolic start for lawmakers to demonstrate cooperation and commitment to the democratic process. Analysts say that how quickly and effectively the parliament chooses its leadership and begins government formation will influence public confidence in Iraq’s political institutions.

Following the election of parliamentary leaders and the president, the largest political bloc will begin negotiations to form a cabinet. This step is often complicated, requiring agreements on ministerial positions and key policy priorities. Once a government is formed, Iraq can focus on addressing economic challenges, security concerns, and infrastructure development.

Monday’s session is seen as an important milestone in Iraq’s democratic process. Despite past delays in forming governments, political leaders have expressed hope that this new parliament will work efficiently to meet the expectations of Iraqi citizens.

The coming weeks are likely to be closely watched by both domestic observers and the international community, as Iraq navigates the delicate process of building a stable and inclusive government that can address the country’s pressing needs.
