Iranian Prisoner Dies After Alleged Denial of Medical Care

Somayeh Rashidi, a 42-year-old Iranian woman imprisoned on charges of alleged links to the banned opposition group Mujahideen-e-Khalq, died on September 25, 2025, in a Tehran hospital. Her death has sparked outrage among human rights organizations, who accuse Iranian authorities of deliberately delaying medical treatment, leading to her demise.

Allegations of Medical Neglect

According to the Human Rights Activists News Agency (HRANA), Rashidi had a history of seizures and fell ill on September 15. Despite repeated visits to the prison health center, authorities allegedly dismissed her condition, accusing her of drug abuse, and delayed her transfer to a hospital. Rights group Hengaw reported that prison officers beat her and accused her of "malingering" instead of providing immediate medical attention.

Calls for Accountability

The Center for Human Rights in Iran (CHRI) has condemned the authorities' actions, calling for an independent investigation into Rashidi's death and accountability for those responsible for the alleged medical neglect. They argue that such deliberate denial of care constitutes torture and a violation of the right to life.

Broader Concerns Over Prison Conditions

Rashidi's death highlights ongoing concerns about the treatment of prisoners in Iran, particularly women. Reports from Qarchak Prison in Varamin indicate systemic issues, including overcrowding, lack of medical facilities, and routine delays in medical treatment for inmates. Human rights organizations have long documented these conditions, calling for urgent reforms to ensure the safety and well-being of detainees.
