Violence Erupts During Torch Rally in Imphal West Amid Restrictions

Post by : Bianca Suleiman

Tensions surged in the Imphal West district of Manipur as thousands of residents breached curfews to hold a torch-lit demonstration for justice following a recent bomb explosion.

Defiant Torchlight Protest

The demonstration commenced around 7 pm on Thursday from Singjamei, drawing large crowds brandishing torches. Protesters called for the immediate arrest of those accountable for the April 7 bomb blast in Tronglaobi, which tragically took the lives of two children.

Rally Approaches Sensitive Areas

Marching for over two kilometers, the protest reached Chingamathak, an area close to critical administrative sites, including the Chief Minister's residence, police headquarters, and Lok Bhavan.

Escalating Tensions with Security Forces

Reports indicated that some attendees shouted anti-security slogans, confronting the deployed forces. Despite being outnumbered, security officials urged the crowd to disperse amidst prohibitory orders.

The situation swiftly deteriorated into chaos.

Clashes and Control Efforts

As tensions rose, security personnel resorted to baton charges and fired multiple rounds of tear gas to maintain control. In retaliation, some protesters hurled stones, escalating the encounter.

Injuries and Ongoing Curfew Concerns

Several injuries were reported during the clashes, with at least five individuals hospitalized for minor injuries and tear gas exposure. Authorities reinforced stringent curfew measures, restricting night movement in various regions of the state following prior violence linked to the explosion.

Officials expressed concerns that certain factions might seek to exacerbate the unrest and target security forces amid this volatile situation.
