Frida Kahlo's Self-Portrait Achieves Historic $55 Million Auction Sale

Post by : Raina Nasser

A self-portrait by the renowned Mexican artist Frida Kahlo has made headlines by selling for an astonishing $54.66 million in New York, now holding the title of the most expensive painting by a woman to ever be sold at auction. This remarkable sale occurred on Thursday at Sotheby’s, where the artwork, named El Sueño (La Cama) or The Dream (The Bed), was anticipated to reach between $40 million and $60 million. The buyer remains anonymous.

This piece, crafted in 1940, depicts Kahlo reclining in a bed that appears to float among clouds, with a skeleton beneath it that is bound by sticks of dynamite. The work intricately blends Mexican folkloric elements with European surrealist touches. Experts emphasize that it embodies a deeply personal moment in her tumultuous life, particularly shaped by her relationship with fellow artist Diego Rivera.

Sotheby’s hailed this work as "the most valuable painting by a woman artist ever offered at auction." It eclipses the previous record set by American artist Georgia O’Keeffe, whose 1932 piece Jimson Weed/White Flower No. 1 sold for $44.4 million in 2014.

This auction comes on the heels of another record-breaking event at Sotheby’s in New York, where Austrian painter Gustav Klimt’s Portrait of Elisabeth Lederer sold for $236.4 million, the second-highest price for any artwork at auction. The most extravagant sale remains Leonardo da Vinci’s Salvator Mundi, acquired for $450 million in 2017.

Frida Kahlo, who passed away in 1954 at age 47, is globally acclaimed for her striking self-portraits and distinctive artistic flair. The sale of The Dream (The Bed) adds another landmark to her remarkable legacy and underscores the increasing acknowledgment and valuation of female artists’ contributions to the international art market.
