A 16-year-old from Halifax is facing charges of child sexual abuse and possession of child exploitation materials, with court proceedings now pushed to January for the defence to examine extensive evidence.
Authorities allege the youth was linked to an online extremist organization known as 764, which allegedly coerces children into self-harm and sexual activities on camera. Investigations suggest he may have interacted with numerous minors across the globe.
In a recent move, the Canadian government officially labeled 764 among other groups as terrorist entities. This new classification is being reviewed by prosecutors to determine its potential impact on the ongoing case, reiterating the presumption of innocence for the accused.
Revised conditions of release for the teen have been implemented, barring the use of internet-connected devices, though he is permitted limited access to a basic mobile phone for communicating with his lawyer.
Officials express concern that, despite the rarity of such cases, the rise of digital networks could result in a rise in similar incidents. The youth is set to return to court in January to enter his plea.
