Guilbeault Expresses Doubts Over Canada’s 2030 Climate Goals

Post by : Mina Rahman

Former federal minister Steven Guilbeault has voiced serious concerns about Canada's ability to achieve its 2030 climate objectives due to recent governmental decisions. He cautions that critical climate initiatives are facing delays and weakening, rendering the targets “unattainable”.

Guilbeault highlighted that a recent agreement between the federal authorities and Alberta marked a turning point. This deal permits a new bitumen pipeline leading to the British Columbia coast and pauses key climate regulations, such as the oil and gas emissions cap along with elements of the clean electricity framework.

He emphasized that while private investment holds significance, it cannot substitute for robust legal frameworks and regulations. Without these standards, he asserted that Canada cannot sufficiently reduce emissions to honor its commitments.

Moreover, Guilbeault indicated he was not informed of the agreement's details in advance. Upon reviewing its contents, he felt compelled to resign from his cabinet role, as the cost of staying was too high for his principles.

He critiqued Alberta’s government for impeding advancements in renewable energy. He noted that the province had been attracting significant investments until political actions halted new renewable initiatives, leading to substantial job losses.

Guilbeault warns that yielding to Alberta’s demands will likely invite further concessions in the future. He lamented the backward shift in federal climate action efforts, which were previously on a positive trajectory.

Despite his resignation, he remains committed to advocating for stronger climate measures within his party, hoping his actions will prompt the government to reconsider its approach and strive for a more equitable solution.
