UK Lawsuit Seeks £3 Billion from Google Over Ad Practices

Post by : Bianca Suleiman

In a significant legal move, Google is facing an antitrust lawsuit in the United Kingdom, with allegations surrounding its misuse of dominance in the online display advertising sector.

Filed on behalf of British advertisers, the lawsuit seeks compensation amounting to £3 billion (approximately $4 billion). KP Law is spearheading this action, asserting that Google unfairly promoted its advertising offerings while stifling competition from others.

The plaintiffs claim that Google leveraged its market influence to prioritize its own display advertising solutions, such as banner ads, which they argue resulted in inflated costs for advertisers seeking services that were less effective.

This case is being processed as a collective action throughout the UK, meaning that all advertisers who paid for Google’s services since October 1, 2015, will be automatically included, unless they opt out.

In response, a spokesperson from Google has dismissed the allegations as “without merit,” asserting that advertisers prefer its tools due to their “simplicity, effectiveness, and affordability.”

Google further noted that the lawsuit has yet to be officially served.

This latest lawsuit adds to the increasing global scrutiny of Google's advertising practices. The company is already facing multiple investigations in the UK, EU, and the US related to alleged anti-competitive behavior.

In a related development, another lawsuit from last year accused Google of overcharging for online advertising. Moreover, a £13.6 billion claim representing various online publishers was approved to proceed to trial in 2024.

In the US, authorities are pushing to dismantle parts of Google's digital advertising sector to curb its market power.

Previously, the European Union has also targeted Google, imposing a hefty 2.95 billion euro fine for allegedly favoring its own services over its competitors. Google has announced plans to appeal.
